What Happens When Aging Becomes Optional?

Near the end of the nineteenth century, some respected scientists believed that the great laws of physics had largely been discovered. Yet the remaining mysteries opened the door to relativity, quantum mechanics, computers, and the modern world.

Even brilliant people can mistake the limits of current knowledge for the limits of possibility.

We may be making that mistake with the human lifespan.

For most of history, aging has been treated as unavoidable. But aging emerges from physical processes: cellular senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, molecular damage, epigenetic changes, and declining regeneration.

We do not yet know how to safely reverse them in humans. But increasingly, we can study them. What can be understood may eventually be manipulated.

The goal is not simply living longer. Keeping someone alive for 150 years while extending frailty and dementia would hardly be a victory. The meaningful goal is healthspan: extending the years we remain physically capable, mentally sharp, independent, and healthy.

Researchers are investigating senescent cells, gene and cell therapies, regenerative medicine, and partial cellular reprogramming. None of this proves humans will live for centuries. But aging is increasingly something we can investigate rather than simply accept.

And biology is not advancing alone. AI can accelerate drug discovery, robotics can automate laboratories, and genetic engineering gives us increasingly precise control over biology. Nanotechnology and abundant energy could expand those possibilities even further.

Together, these technologies could surprise even me—and I'm wildly optimistic.

So I am planning for the possibility of an extremely long life.

That changes how I think about work. Retirement does not have to mean waiting out the final chapter. At 80, instead of saying, “I'm too old to start over,” people might ask, “What do I want to do for my next fifty years?”

Life itself would feel much larger. Imagine mastering several professions, learning new languages, watching a forest you planted become ancient, celebrating your 150th birthday, visiting another planet, or beginning again at an age we now associate with endings.

Relationships would change too. Friendships might last centuries. People could fall in love, grow apart, reinvent themselves, and meet again decades later. Others might become inseparable, accumulating a depth of shared history humans have never experienced.

Families could become almost unrecognizable. Imagine eight or ten generations alive simultaneously. If people remain biologically young longer, reproduction, inheritance, population, and family structure would all have to adapt.

The economics would change too. What happens to retirement, Social Security, inheritance, or careers if people remain healthy past 100? A healthy 100-year-old who can work, invent, and create is very different from someone requiring intensive care. Longer healthspan could preserve something civilization constantly loses: human experience.

The world could also become profoundly divided.

Imagine billions of people remaining young and healthy while others refuse treatment because of religion, distrust, conspiracy theories, or a sincere belief that aging and death are what God intended. After a century, we might effectively have two human cultures sharing the same civilization.

Would religions divide over it? Would people accepting treatment be accused of “playing God”? And what happens if access depends on wealth? Inequality becomes something entirely different when money can buy another century of healthy life.

I hope we would learn to respect personal agency. People should have the right to extend their healthy lives without being condemned for interfering with nature. Vaccines, antibiotics, organ transplants, IVF, and surgery already prevent outcomes that were once perfectly natural.

But freedom works both ways. Someone who understands the technology and chooses to age naturally should have that right too.

None of this is guaranteed. Rejuvenating cells or mice is not the same as safely rejuvenating a human being. Aging is enormously complicated, and cancer makes uncontrolled regeneration dangerous.

The first breakthroughs may add only a few healthy years. But those years could buy time to reach better treatments. We may only need to remain healthy enough to reach the next breakthrough.

I want the time—not simply to exist, but to build, explore, love, laugh, learn, change my mind, watch today's impossible technologies become ordinary, and attempt projects that once required several generations.

I do not know whether I have another twenty years or another two hundred.

For the first time in history, it may be sensible to prepare for either.
